The Secrets of Successful Bulk Terminals by TBA Group

TBA Group, a leading supplier of Terminal Operating Systems (TOS) within the bulk sector, have analysed terminals over a period of more than 20 years and, as a result of their observations, released a free guide for bulk terminals highlighting the core characteristics, or processes, where successful terminals differ from their less successful counterparts.

Reducing the cost of operational expenditure (OPEX) is identified as a primary metric in the success of terminals, ensuring sustainability and competitiveness, and the guide is therefore centralised around this theme

The demands on bulk terminals, to remain competitive amongst increasingly volatile markets, evolving supply chains and increased competition, requires terminals to focus on delivering cost effective, efficient solutions whilst remaining profitable. The shift in the micro and macro environment has left many terminals lagging somewhat behind, stuck in archaic practices that no longer align to demands of the sector. What may appear as an uphill struggle can of course be turned around and, through relatively simple process improvements, terminals can transform their operations, ensuring future environmental changes can be managed in such a way that the terminal remains competitive, profitable and ultimately sustainable.

The guide, available at www.tba.group/reduce-opex, seeks to inform and facilitate a reflective process encouraging terminals to look inward, analysing their current processes, and provides an opportunity to learn about strategies/solutions to deliver improvements. Key areas for optimisation of terminals are addressed which looks at vessel delays, equipment effectiveness, demurrage, truck turnaround times and administration costs offering solutions to enhance effectiveness and reduce unnecessary OPEX within each category.

Many leading bulk terminals also utilise a TOS to drive their procedural improvements but for a terminal that is unfamiliar with the software choices available, and the strengths and limitations of each, it can be hard to know where to begin in the search for a solution. This guide seeks to address this issue by educating terminals in the process of ‘Selecting the right TOS’ and the nuances between off-the-shelf and bespoke solutions in respect of: Functionality, typically based on the perceived complexity of operations; Cost, centred around the Capex, resource requirements, licencing options and associated risk; Service and future developments, evolving requirements, in-house support structures, ongoing developments.
