The Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District is the 13th-busiest U.S. port district, located in Louisiana midway between Houston and New Orleans. The greater port handles breakbulk, dry bulk, and liquid bulk plus project cargoes totaling over 48.3 million tons annually according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers statistics. The port’s facilities include three terminals, 16 ship berths, 1.4 million square feet of covered storage, three open berth for project cargoes, a private grain elevator, two automated ship loaders, a paved lay-down yard, a dry bulk terminal, an industrial park plus a short line railroad. The terminals are less than 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico on a 40-foot deep, 400-foot-wide ship channel.
